Chapter 6.

The man’s grin was unnerving, too sharp, too evil. His laughter was maniacal, high pitched and indicating he was enjoying himself far too much.

His eyes were lit with a dark, evil intent that I could not even fathom. And what was worse, this man was human.

“You’ve lost, Angel,” he said, stepping forward.

It took everything in me not to stagger back. I had not realized he had noticed me, but his eyes, now on my form, were penetrating. It was as if he had some special powers that saw straight through me. I had never felt so exposed, especially in front of a human stranger.

The human growled as he spat out the words, “You know you’ve lost. Soon, New York will be a wasteland, and the rest of the planet will follow. The Demons who’ve come through the portals will not stop until every soul in this city is under their control. And when we’re finished here, we’ll go elsewhere and do the same until the world is under our control.”

“You’re wrong!” I shouted back, a roar to my voice. And he was, in so many ways.

Any soul killed unjustly by a Demon would go straight to Heaven. They would ultimately be safe.

But what of those left on Earth? Would there be any civilization left after the Demons had finished with it?

If they completed their task. I had to remind myself that just because he had the upper hand in this moment did not mean he had won. I would not allow his success to happen.

“You’ll never be able to close the portal. You’re all done for,” the man yelled, his eyes glowing a fiery red to match the Demons nearby. The Demons continued to step out, not even looking at the man. It was as though he did not exist to them.

I shifted my weight from foot to foot and gripped my sword tightly. I brought it up, ready to strike if I needed to. I didn’t want to kill a human, but this one was definitely a lost cause. He was responsible for this. I saw no remorse in his eyes, no regret for all of the damage he had done. He would do it again and again if given a chance.

I ran forward and lifted my sword. Pain hit me like a burning iron through my chest.

The man before me cackled like a Witch as he threw red, burning light at me, very similar to Kadie’s white magic. “You can’t stop me, Angel,” he said. “You have no powers, to speak of.”

I cried out against the pain squeezing my ribs and crushing my lungs.

I couldn’t breathe.

Couldn’t think.

He was right.

I was a fool.

How could I have assumed he was a mere human who had the ability to control Demons? I should have prepared myself better. I should not have made any assumptions. My arrogance would be my undoing.

My fingers loosened around my sword and it clattered to the ground. My throat began to close up, my head swimming in a vision of black and silver stars.
